Joining forces to set a world record
Shanghai, 9 April 2012 – With the help of cleaning specialist Karcher, the world’s biggest cleaning crew today set a new Guinness record in Shanghai, China. More than 100 men, women and young people used walk-behind sweepers to clean a square at the Pudong New International Expo Center. The venue was chosen to coincide with the four-day China Clean cleaning show, which opened today at the Expo Center, attracting 200 exhibitors.
Karcher China employees first showed participants from several nations, including Shanghai Deputy Mayor Shen Jun, how to use the KM 70/20 C and KM 70/30 C sweepers, which sweep paths and courtyards easily and quickly. By way of comparison, with a broom you can sweep an area of 100 m2 in an hour. With the Karcher sweepers you can clean the same area in around six minutes. After a short practice run the official world record bid began at 9.20 a.m. in the presence of an adjudicator from the Guinness World Records Institution. The square was cleaned thoroughly lane by lane for two minutes and the record was achieved.
It was a third Guinness World Record for Karcher. In 1988 the company carried out the biggest-ever facade cleaning project on the Colonnades in St. Peter’s Square in Rome, Italy. Last year, Karcher employees took part in the world’s longest Segway parade in Berlin, Germany.
Karcher has 8,700 employees in 54 countries and 80 subsidiaries. The family-owned company, founded in 1935, manufactures cleaning equipment in Germany, China, Italy, Romania, the United States, Brazil and Mexico. Fifty thousand service points in all countries ensure that customer service is available all over the world. More than 600 engineers and technicians are engaged in designing new engineering solutions at the company’s development centres. In 2011 Karcher earned its highest-ever annual sales revenue – EUR 1.7 billion – and sold the most items of equipment – 8.25 million – in the company’s 77-year history.
Karcher has been represented by a sales company of its own in China since 2002. From its head office in Shanghai, over 130 employees supply the country with cleaning technology, cooperating with more than 300 trading partners to do so. Since 2004, Karcher has operated a production facility in Ningbo with a payroll of over 230 employees. The world market leader is currently constructing a new 27,000 m2 factory in Changshu that is scheduled to start production later this year.
